Beginner Course (ENGL 101)

  7. Brief course description: Within a vibrant online community of learners, students interact daily with their teacher using a blend of live video/web conferencing and email conferencing. This course will help students to begin speaking English with greater confidence. The course is aimed at absolute Beginners or those students who have learnt a little English but lack the confidence to build on it. The clearly defined grammar syllabus includes past, present, and future time/tenses and will provide a solid foundation on which to build. The presentation of new language will be gradual, methodical, and clearly structured, giving learners a clear sense of progression. Students will be given an introduction to the sounds of English, and the vocabulary syllabus will focus on high-frequency survival words and phrases. Simple Listening and Reading skills work will be gradually introduced as will be a basic introduction to Writing skills on a word and sentence level.
 


Elementary Course (ENGL 201)

  6. Brief course description: Within a vibrant online community of learners, students interact daily with their teacher using a blend of live video/web conferencing and email conferencing. The course will help students speak English with confidence. In order to achieve this outcome, the key elements of Grammar, Vocabulary and Pronunciation will be given equal importance.
    - Grammar: Instructors will provide clear and memorable presentations of new structures.
    - Vocabulary: The course will rapidly expand the student's knowledge of high-frequency words and phrases.
    - Pronunciation: Students will be given a solid foundation in the sounds of English and will learn to recognize and apply rules and patterns of pronunciation.
    Further skills development will include listening for gist, understanding connected speech, learning pre-reading strategies which will enable the student to organize the reading process into manageable tasks, and learning "the nuts and bolts" of writing on a word and sentence level.
 


Pre-Intermediate Course (ENGL 301)

  6. Brief course description: Within a vibrant online community of learners, students interact daily with their teacher using a blend of live video/web conferencing and email conferencing. The course will help the student at this level maintain his/her enthusiasm and build his/her confidence in communicating more effectively. In order to achieve this outcome, the key elements of Grammar, Vocabulary, and Pronunciation will be given equal importance:
    - Grammar: Instructors will provide a thorough review of Elementary structures followed by clear presentations of new structures.
    - Vocabulary: The course will revise and reactivate previously learnt vocabulary and increase the student's knowledge of high-frequency words and phrases.
    - Pronunciation: The course will give students a solid foundation in the sounds of English and build on their awareness of rules and patterns.
    Further skills development will include listening for gist and detail, understanding connected speech, succeeding with challenging reading tasks, developing micro-writing skills, and becoming more aware of register, structure, and fixed phrases.
 


Intermediate Course (ENGL 302)

  6. Brief course description: Within a vibrant online community of learners, students interact daily with their teacher using a blend of live video/web conferencing and email conferencing. The course will present students with fresh challenges which will help them to realize how much they know and how to transform their passive knowledge into active knowledge, all within the context of a steady input of new language. Each lesson will have clearly stated grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation aims in order to provide students with a clear focus and sense of progress and to encourage confident communication.
    - Grammar: Revision and extension of the main grammatical structures and the introduction of new tenses.
    - Vocabulary: A systematic expansion of topic-based lexical areas with focus on word formation.
    - Pronunciation: Practice in pronouncing word sounds and whole words clearly, awareness of word and sentence stress, greater awareness of underlying rules and patterns, and an introduction to the use of phonetic symbols.
    Further skills development will include practice in listening for gist and detail, practice in interacting with authentic spoken language, practice in reading a wide variety of authentic text types, and development of micro-writing skills with awareness-raising of register, structure and fixed phrases.
 


Upper Intermediate Course (ENGL 401)

  6. Brief course description: Within a vibrant online community of learners, students interact daily with their teacher using a blend of live video/web conferencing and email conferencing. This course will exploit motivating material and challenging tasks to help students at this level to "push on" to become proficient users of the English language, communicating both with fluency and accuracy. Each lesson will have clearly stated grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation aims in order to provide students with concrete learning objectives and a sense of progress.
    - Grammar: Revision and extension of the main structures and the introduction of more sophisticated grammar structures.
    - Vocabulary: A systematic expansion of vocabulary in topic-based lexical areas with additional focus on affixation.
    - Pronunciation: Fine-tuning in the pronunciation of difficult sounds, the application of appropriate rhythm and intonation, a further development of the student's awareness of spelling-pronunciation rules and patterns, and the use of phonetic symbols in dictionaries to check correct pronunciation.
    Further skills development will include listening skills development through the exploitation of motivating listening texts and tasks, which are challenging but always achievable and which expose students to a wide variety of accents and speed of speech, reading skills development through exposure to a wide variety of authentic text types matched to challenging and motivating tasks, a focus on and practice in the process of writing, i.e. planning, organising, drafting, and checking, a focus on micro-writing skills, such as paragraphing or using connecting expressions and the awareness-raising of appropriate register, structure, and fixed phrases.
