Business English / BULATS Preparation Courses
The Red Rock ELC offers two Business English courses:
- Business English 1
- Business English 2
While both courses are excellent BULATS preparation courses, students who enroll in these courses are, by no means, required to take the BULATS exam.
Resources for Business English / BULATS Preparation Courses
The Business English Curriculum uses Business Benchmark, which is published by Cambridge University Press.
Business Benchmark helps students advance quickly with their Business English vocabulary and skills while giving them grammar practice in business contexts. This resource also helps students prepare for BULATS, the Business Language Testing Service, which is an internationally-recognised Cambridge ESOL Business English exam, by using real exam papers from Cambridge ESOL. The Student's Book is also accompanied by a CD-ROM which contains a complete BULATS test supplied by Cambridge ESOL, so students can practise for the BULATS Computer Test.
Key Features of Each Business English Course
- Twenty-four short units which cover important vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills for business
- Authentic and up-to-date business language in a range of contexts from "Customer Services" to "New Technologies"
- Topics and ideas to engage students whether they are already at work or preparing to work in business in the future
- The Personal Study Book contains extra activities and a Word List of core business vocabulary from the Student's Book
- An "Exams Practice" section for BULATS with authentic exam papers from Cambridge ESOL
- An "Exam Skills" section for BULATS, so students know exactly what to do to get the best score in each exam task type
What is BULATS?
The Business Language Testing Service (BULATS) is a language assessment service designed to test the language of employees who need to use a foreign language in their work and to test the language proficiency learned by students and employees on language courses or on professional/business courses. BULATS also provides a service for companies and organisations which need a reliable way of assessing the language ability of groups of employees or trainees.
Individuals: Why take BULATS?
Individuals can make use of BULATS in a number of ways. On the one hand, they can use BULATS as an indicator of language ability in a CV. Alternatively, individuals can use BULATS to confirm the assessment of a standard certificate (e.g. First Certificate in English) which may have been obtained sometime in the past. It can also serve as a recommendation to an individual as to which standard exam he or she should prepare for.
Companies and organisations: Why use BULATS?
Companies and organisations primarily use BULATS in a human resources context for the assessment of language skills of job applicants and existing staff. Additionally, it is increasingly being used for the monitoring and support of language training in companies. For example, it may be used to track language gain over an extended training period. Companies and organisations also use BULATS for establishing benchmarks, setting linguistic goals, and assessing employees' achievements against these criteria.
The table below illustrates how scores from the BULATS exam relate to the scores from the listed Cambridge ESOL exams.
